VietNamNet Bridge – About 500 teachers of English in HCM City and neighbouring provinces last Saturday attended the second annual TESOL conference, learning about the latest language teaching methods that incorporate a fun, individualistic approach.
At the one-day TESOL (Teachers of English to Speakers of Other Languages) conference, participants from local schools and training institutions learned about skills for teaching extensive reading, understanding the problems of teaching grammar and writing, and using modern approaches to enhance student comprehension.
In his talk about extensive reading, the main lecturer of the conference, Richard Day, head of the University of Hawaii's Department of Second Language Studies, said that teachers should give books that are relevant to students' ages and interests.
He also added that reading should be different from translating because each requires different skills. This approach is different from the traditional method in Vietnam of reading texts aloud prior to translation.
Nguyen Thi Hong Thu, a teacher of English, said that she learned different approaches at the conference that would help her teach small children.
This is the second time the Viet Nam USA Society English Training Service Centre (VUS) together with TEFL International and the Australian International School organised such an event.
