Competitive Package

• Salary: 1360 USD – 1680 USD per month, depending on qualifications and experience (tax is payable on a sliding scale, most teachers pay around 10-20%)

Teachers are encouraged and expected to teach across a range of courses.

We also run courses in other cities as part of our corporate program, and there are opportunities to be based in Danang or to spend time in one of the provincial cities or towns (for example Haiphong), to really get a feel for Vietnam – see our website for further information.

Timetable

240 hours per quarter - normally scheduled at 20-23 hours per week. Most Kindy and YL teaching hours are during the weekend, except during summer when classes are also run on weekdays. Most adult teaching hours are in the evening, although some corporate teaching is daytime. Classes run from 7.30am to 9.45pm Monday – Friday; 7.45 am – 8.15pm on Saturday and 7.45am – 6pm on Sunday. Split shifts are sometimes inevitable, though they are avoided where possible.

Support

The Academic team includes an Academic Manager, Academic Coordinators and/or Senior teachers plus support staff in each location. They are there to support you in both academic and personal matters and will help you settle into your new life in Vietnam.

The school does not provide accommodation, but can arrange a hotel (at a modest cost) for arrival. Please note that the contract also includes a settling in allowance of 150 USD to help with initial accommodation expenses. The school will offer help in finding longer term housing as well. You will be met at the airport and taken to your hotel.

Job requirements for all teaching positions

• Native English speaker

• BA or MA (NB this is essential for Work Permit requirements)

• CELTA / Trinity TESOL or equivalent

• At least one year’s experience or B in CELTA etc.

• Enthusiasm, energy and a strong sense of cultural awareness are essential.

Work Permit

All expatriate staff require a visa PLUS a work permit. Apollo applies for a business visa before the employee departs their current country of residence. All costs for visa and all costs for Work Permit documents incurred in Vietnam are covered by Apollo (receipts required). Work Permit costs incurred outside Vietnam, such as notarization of qualifications (for US citizens) and the criminal background check, are the employees' responsibility. Employees will need to provide originals of documents (TEFL certification & university degree) for notarization in Vietnam. A medical check, done locally, (including blood test) is also required. Apollo will assist in getting this done and cover related costs.

English teaching experts go from practical to practise

HCM CITY – English teachers nationwide discussed how to move classroom teaching from examination to communication in a workshop held last week in HCM City.

Leading international trainers in the English teaching field spoke at the event, attended by more than 700 English teachers and educational managers.

The conference featured internationally recognised teachers in the ESL field, including professors David Nunan and Andy Curtis, who continue to have innovative ideas. They emphasised the importance of a modern approach using communicative methods rather than the traditional approach through grammar.

The conference, free to teachers, is held annually. The Viet Nam-USA Society’s English Training Service Centre co-operated with the Teaching English as Foreign Language International in hosting the workshop.

Hai Phong is located in the delta of the Red River, on the coast of the South China Sea, it is the third largest city of Vietnam and is one of the largest ports in Vietnam. It is approximately 100 kilometres from Hanoi, located on the north-east coast, it is within easy reach of a number of renowned destinations such as Ha Long bay (a UNESCO World Heritage site), Cat Ba Island, Ninh Binh and even China, making it an ideal base for travel. There is also a local airport, Cat Bi, which has regular flights to HCMC and Macau. There is also a regular bus service to Hanoi which takes around 2 hours on average . Within Hai Phong there are a number of local attractions such as Do Son beach, Elephant mountain, Lach Tray Stadium and Hai Phong museum. With regard to nightlife there are a number of bars, cafes and discos to choose from, most noticeably around the Minh Khai district. Hai Phong also has a selection of international hotels and resturants serving Chinese, Thai, Korean, Japanese and Western cusine. There is also the Parkson Plaza complex which has an extensive range of clothing, footwear, jewelery, cosmetics, etc imported from all over the world. The Plaza also has a bowling alley (10 lanes) and a Western style,English film, cinema with 7 screens (the largest outside HCMC). However, Haiphong is unique in that, despite its size, it has a very small expat community which makes it a uniquely Vietnamese city, with very little foreign influence on day to day life. There are ample opportunities to immerse yourself into Vietnamese culture and truly experience a Vietnamese way of life.

The RMIT English Program

RMIT Vietnam English courses range from pre intermediate to advanced levels with the key focus being ‘English for Academic Purposes’. At 28, Quinn Mattingly already is more well-traveled than most people twice his age. He has taught English since February 2005 in South Korea and Vietnam, and during that time has capitalized on his home base by going on journeys in other nearby lands.

The 1997 East Clinton graduate went roaming through Mongolia twice in 2007, both times renting a van, a driver and a guide. Mattingly said he pointed to locations he wanted to go to in Mongolia on a map, and was transported from place to place in the rent-a-van.

On his first trip to Mongolia, which is south of Siberia in Russia and north of China, he went to the Gobi Desert and rode around for a week, staying at white guest tents some nomadic residents have set up for tourists. Nomads, after all, can relate to wanderers.

“You see nothing for hours and hours, then you’ll see a little tent pop up on the horizon,” said Mattingly.

The Mongolians will cook for the tourists, but usually Mattingly did not sleep in the tent the nomads live in.

The primary livestock species of the nomads, said Mattingly, are sheep, goats, horses, camels and cows. In order to feed them in the scant land, the nomads have to keep moving around to find fresh pasture.

The Mongolians sell sheep wool as well as goat wool for cashmere, he said. Goat milk is for their own consumption, he thinks. They milk horses and make an alcohol out of it, their national alcohol, said Mattingly.

“It’s awful,” he said of the fermented mare’s milk.

Like cowboys of the East, the nomadic herdsmen usually appear “burly and rough,” said Mattingly.

In contrast, almost everybody in South Korea has a modern, settled middle-class lifestyle, he said.

After graduating from Bowling Green State University in criminology, Mattingly moved to Los Angeles. Searching for something else or somewhere else, he started doing some internet research and found a TEFL (Teaching English as a Foreign Language) school in Prague, Czechoslovakia. He said he decided to take the course “kind of on a whim,” wanting to go to Europe for a while, anyway.

He completed the one-month class in Prague and then, via e-mail, was hired for a job in South Korea teaching English.

As he puts it, he “kind of just fell into” the combination of teaching abroad and traveling. It affords him the opportunity to live somewhere else and soak up another culture, while also making it more feasible to travel other places far from the Americas.

He said he enjoys teaching children. It’s a fun way to spend the day, he said, “usually, most days.”

He also has found it’s not difficult to make good friends. There are quite a few other English-speaking teachers with whom it’s easy to meet up with, he said.

Mattingly has made a lot of native friends, too. That’s fortunate, because it helps a lot to be friends with someone who, for example, speaks Korean fluently.

“If I didn’t have Korean friends, I probably would have gone mad trying to figure out some of the things I had to figure out,” he said.

There is a lot of demand in foreign countries for people to teach English, said Mattingly. In fact, “it’s pretty much getting more and more” as business becomes more global and companies become more transnational.

In South Korea, English language classes used to be offered mainly in private schools in after-school programs. But the Korean government is putting a foreign teacher in every public school — elementary, middle and high school, said Mattingly. So now a majority of public schools have an embedded English teacher working in the school, making the demand in Korea even greater than before.

Mattingly usually tries to teach a class only in English, which is possible because usually “it won’t be the students’ first day in English class.”

When a communication gap does arise, sometimes there’s a Korean teacher sitting in the classroom or just down the hall.

“If the children don’t understand, generally a picture can help or another kid will understand and relay it,” said Mattingly.

“I didn’t speak any Vietnamese when I was teaching there this past summer. Didn’t really need to. They’re pretty good, better than my Korean students,” he added.

Mattingly taught English in Ho Chi Minh City in Vietnam. The old core part of the city is still referred to as Saigon, he said.

Mattingly had not been born when the American war in Vietnam ended.

“Traveling around the country you can still see things that you know why they’re there. Taking a train up to Hanoi, you can still see bomb craters all along the railroad tracks,” said Mattingly.

A lot of the drivers of the pedal taxis — bicycles with a cart — are “left over from the war” and like to tell Mattingly war stories. He said they are in a “bad situation,” not being eligible for passports or government benefits.

In Vietnam, Mattingly taught the children of the upper middle class — children of families that financially are better off than much of the Vietnamese population. The extracurricular English language classes are voluntary and carry a tuition.

Economically, Vietnam is developing and hatches more smaller businesses than South Korea, Mattingly said.

The streets, he said, are “lined up with shop after shop after shop.”

In South Korea, on the other hand, Mattingly estimates at least three-quarters of the South Korean male population work either for Samsung or LG. To advance in those global companies, an employee needs to know English, he added.

Mattingly, who returned to Clinton County for the holidays, said he will probably sign a one-year contract to teach in Vietnam and probably stay as long as he likes it.

“There’s still a lot of that country I want to explore,” he said.

Like the HP Lab in India, most of the staff are local people who have created breakthrough innovations such as Gesture Key Board for inputting data, the 2D barcode for document securing as well as its TVPrintCast a synchronously delivering printable data along with television signals on existing television broadcasting networks.

“Vietnam is opening up, and because the country improved its telecom infrastructure the IT community feels more comfortable in coming over,” said Gupta.

Vietnam is going through what India went through at the end of 1990s and early 2000s once leading information technology companies placed their bases on research and development after building their manufacturing bases there.

India’s IT industry earned $29.5 billion in 2006 and has set targets of $60 billion in receipts by 2010. The number of employees surged to 1.3 million by 2005 from 284,000 in 1999.

IBM opened its Global Delivery Centre in India in 2,000 with just 50 engineers. By 2006, there were over 6,000 engineers employed at the centre. IBM also opened a similar centre in Vietnam in 2006. It hopes the 200 engineers it originally hired will mushroom to 2,000 by the end of next year.

Vietnam is home to 720 IT companies that employ 25,000 programmers. Annual revenue growth rates average out to between 30-40 per cent.

Vietnam also has an expatriate IT community like Viet Kieu which has been working and living in developed IT markets worldwide such as in the US and western Europe and is forming a crucial link between overseas customers and Vietnam-based developers by helping to reduce culture and language barriers.

Nguyen Trong Duong, deputy director of Information Technology Industry Department under the Ministry of Information and Communications, said the key for Vietnam was to promote its IT industry to boost human resources.

“It is sure that foreign investors to come and place their R&D in Vietnam if talented pool is available. The current human resource in Vietnam is good but limited,” said Duong.

Pham Tan Cong, general secretary of Vietnam Software Association, said Vietnam could maintain the annual human resource growth rate of 50 per cent like India with 25,000 engineers in 2006, 200,000 in 2010 and around 1.5 million by 2015.

“With the targeted number of engineers by 2015, Vietnam will stand behind only China, India and the US. The country has a great opportunity in the history to become an education and human resource hub of the world as well as a leading position country of software after 2015,” said Cong.

Cong proposed the Vietnamese Government boost private and foreign investment in education with international standards. Students will have one year to learn either English or Japanese to meet demand of Japan, US and Europe companies.

The information technology companies will also be attracted into education investment to have recruits or more staff, enabling to students to write software from the third school year at university.

According to the Global Outsourcing Report 2005 made by well-known specialists in the sector Mark Minevich from Going Global Ventures Inc and Frank-Jürgen Richter from Horaris, Vietnam was ranked among top 30 leading outsourcing software nations by 2015.

“Quality human resources is key to Vietnam, The country’s education system is excellent, with a focus on mathematics and logic that creates a ready supply of raw talent for the IT industry. Professional skills are taught by western training companies, which are training thousands of Vietnam programmers in dedicated centres across Vietnam,” the report said.

Under Vietnam’s commitment to the World Trade Organization, the Vietnamese Government accepted market-oriented training and education in science and technology, opening for foreign investors in providing training courses for local students especially in science and technology.

Foreign investors are also allowed to open wholly foreign-owned schools from the beginning of 2009.

According to the IT human resource development of Vietnam to 2020, the government will give a certain percentage out of the total one per cent of the state budget funding for science and technology to deploy R&D in IT, electronics and telecoms as well as establish a fund for supporting IT training.

Vietnam will expand IT education in electronics and telecoms in Hanoi, Haiphong, Ho Chi Minh City, Can Tho, Danang, Dalat, Thai Nguyen Vinh and Hue as well as diversifying IT training models including remote training and training at works.

The government is encouraging the expansion of certificate granting bases and deploying one year additional IT training for non-IT students at universities as well as the second IT engineering certificate along with non-IT bachelor. IT training will be available in all secondary and primary schools by 2015.

A shortage of software programmers, which has increased after international corporations placed their bases in Vietnam such as Intel, IBM, Foxconn and Compal. Local companies have raised their remuneration for staff to a minimum level of $500. However, even at this salary level, Vietnam still has significant labour cost advantages. The global market will need an estimated one million programmers by 2008 and 10 million by 2015.

The country’s largest software company FPT has plans to raise its total staff to 10,000 later this year. Among its current staff, 30 per cent are graduates from its Aptech chain. Few of its staff study abroad.

Nguyen Kim Cuong, CMC vice president, said the company also planned to have 1,000 programmers by 2010, rising from its current 200 staff.

The measures for increasing IT staff include an international certificate test in Vietnam as well as the tuition of both training centres such as Aptech and vocational colleges.

The industry would need either secondary graduates with IT certificates to do for their projects instead of only university graduates.

International certificates such as Microsoft Developer Certificate are acknowledged by software international community and having an international certificate will help students have a job immediately, while a company can assess right capability of its staff.

Cuong estimated that Vietnam had less than around 500 engineers with international certificates who often work for international companies in Vietnam.

Introduction to Thailand: Although Thailand’s unofficial moniker as the “Land of Smiles” has become something of a cliché, it is no less true because of it. Smiling is a Thai specialty, as is cooking some of the tastiest food on the planet and a warm welcome wherever you go.

Renowned for its tolerant and ancient peace-loving culture, Thailand has become a Mecca for people from all walks of life. Whether you’re looking for an idyllic beach, historical monuments or an extremely diverse nightlife, then Thailand has something to offer.

Living here can be an exhilarating mixture of pleasantness and frustration. If the fumes and chaos of Bangkok become a little too much, for example, you’re only a short ride away from tropical paradise and inexpensive resorts. It’s also well situated for visiting the rest of Asia and Australia is only four hours away by plane.

More and more Thais are learning to speak good English, so communication should be fairly easy, especially in the tourist areas of Bangkok, Chiang Mai (Thailand’s second largest city) and beachside resorts.

Thailand has a constitutional monarchy (the current King is the longest serving monarch in the world) and has a proud history of never having been colonized. Royalty is revered absolutely and it is never appropriate to speak negatively about them, even in close company.

It is also worth noting that the tsunami-hit areas around Phuket are recovering much quicker than their counterparts in other countries because of the more advanced infrastructure. So be sure to make Phuket an option if you are planning a holiday here.

Visiting Thailand: The high season from October to March is the most pleasant in terms of weather. Temperatures are bearable and can even be quite pleasant around Christmas time. Note, however, that this is also the most expensive period for resorts and hotels.

April is best avoided as the temperatures can reach into the 40’s and, no matter how used to it you are, it still feels unbearable.

The rains come in June and temperatures settle down again. Visit from this time until September if you like a good bargain and don’t mind the odd shower.

Most of Thailand is safe. However, there is a lot of unrest from separatists in the southernmost tip of the country, particularly in the provinces of Yala, Narrathiwat and Pattani, so they are best avoided.

Getting around: Bangkok is notorious for its traffic jams and this would seem a fair assessment. Having said that, it is often no worse than in many other major cities, and you can learn to navigate your way round much more efficiently after you have been here a while. There are plenty of ways to get around Bangkok and whichever mode you choose will largely depend on how adventurous you are.

The safest and most efficient way of getting around is by the Sky Train which snakes above the city in most major areas, including the business districts. Then there is the relatively new underground Metro which complements the sky train routes and, again, serves important areas. Nonetheless, at present, the service is fairly limited to central Bangkok but work is ongoing and by the end of the decade, the public transport system should be on a par with any modern city.

Next up, Bangkok is served by a very cheap taxi service. The taxis are mostly quite new and air-conditioned, as well as being in plentiful supply – you’ll never really have to wait more than a minute or two before flagging one down. However, this means they also clog up the rounds, thus compounding the traffic jam situation.

Taxi fares are charged by the meter and anyone who offers to take you somewhere for a price should be refused as the chances are they will be ripping you off. A sizeable minority of taxi drivers, it has to be said, also like to throw in a few fairground-like thrills into the bargain while they are driving you to your destination! It is, nonetheless, a service most favoured by expats and seems to work fairly well.

If you’re adventurous, you might like to try the famous samlor or ‘tuk-tuk’ as they are better known. These three wheeled fume-belching open-air taxis are a fun and cheap way to explore the city. Fares are negotiated in advance with the driver. Also, for the even more adventurous, motor-cycle taxis can speedily wind their way among the traffic if you’re in a hurry.

If you are looking to travel around Thailand, the train network is certainly a cheap and comfortable, if very slow, option. Most destinations are served from Hua Lompong station in Bangkok and sleeper carriages are available on long overnight journeys. The road network is also an option if you want to hire a car. Road quality is usually fairly good with the majority of signposts written in English as well as Thai.

A modern air-transport system serves Thailand as well as other international destinations. New, low cost airlines are bringing fares down to both domestic and Asian cities. Thai Airways International (THAI) is the national carrier and very good it is too. In anticipation of the new Bangkok International Airport (to be opened sometime in 2006), THAI are going through something of a revamp, so the service should eventually be top notch.

Housing: Most expatriates live in condominiums or rented houses. These are in plentiful supply in most major Thai cities and there is a good range available.

Depending on your budget, it is possible to live in anything from a modest one bedroom apartment, to a grand 200 sq metre condo overlooking the city. Most condos come with a swimming pool and gym facilities. Rental prices are usually about half to two-thirds of the price you would pay for the same thing in the UK.

By law, foreigners are not allowed to own land in Thailand. You can, however, purchase apartments above the ground floor and these can be fairly inexpensive, although – thanks to the booming economy – prices are going up fast.

In addition, the laws for purchasing apartments mean that, unless you have a good stock of money back home (where a third or more of the money has to come from), getting a loan from a Thai bank is quite difficult.

Some foreigners opt to get round the law by purchasing property through a Thai partner or friend, although, in certain circumstances, this might not be a good idea.

Jobs: Thailand is a popular country for expatriate workers. The perks and standard of living here makes it an attractive proposition, which means it can be fairly competitive. A large number of expatriates have been sent here by their companies back home but there are a sizeable number of them who got jobs while visiting Thailand.

By far the most feasible option for foreigners is to work as an English teacher. Acquiring some formal qualification, such as TEFL certificate, will virtually guarantee you work here. There is a reason for this, however. The salary for most English teachers is very small and you will be lucky to earn anything more than 30,000 baht (₤450) a month. That’s enough to get by but don’t expect to be able to afford any luxuries.

Try www.ajarn.com to get the bigger picture. You will require a work permit and special visa (which must be obtained outside the country) to work in Thailand. These require a huge amount of bureaucracy and, unless you have a job sorted out already, it is pointless trying to obtain one.

Working illegally is not advised unless you don’t mind risking a spell in the Bangkok Hilton (and I don’t mean the hotel). Try these English language newspapers for the latest vacancies – www.bangkokpost.com or www.nationmultimedia.com.

Study: Thailand probably has the most diverse and varied international education scene in the world. There are some excellent schools here, although they are not cheap. However, it shouldn’t be too difficult to find a school which fits your budget and location requirements. www.isat.or.th is a useful resource as is the Bangkok Post’s education section www.bangkokpost.com/education.

The local government education system is going through a period of radical change and, although there are many success stories, there are few Thai schools that would come close to international schools in terms of suitability for expatriate children.

Universities mostly cater for the local population although a few of the bigger universities offer courses in English. My general impression is that they are not quite up to the standards of good British or American institutions but are certainly an option for students who want to study abroad.

Leisure: There are so many ways of spending your leisure time in Thailand, it is impossible to mention even half of them here. As a general guide, however, read on.

Restaurants serving local and international cuisine from all corners of the planet can be found in our capital. And Bangkok certainly has the best nightlife, ranging from the modern hip dance clubs on Royal City Avenue to the famed dens of iniquity on Soi Nana or Soi Cowboy. Whatever rocks your boat, Thailand can certainly rock it!

If you want something more tranquil, visit the islands of Ko Samui, Ko Samet, Phuket or the land resort of Hua Hin. Jungle and countryside can be found in the beautiful Kao Yai national park (just a couple of hours drive from Bangkok) or the high mountains of the north around Chiang Mai or Chiang Rai.

If you want history, a must is a visit to Kanchanaburi – home to the fascinating “Death Railway” and the fabled Bridge Over the River Kwai.

Thailand welcomes people of all nationalities, religions and cultures as well as those from the LGBT community.

Health care: Good health care is readily available in Thailand. Bumrungrad hospital in Bangkok provides world class private health care and there are many smaller international hospitals around areas populated by tourists.

It’s a good idea to take out health insurance if not provided by your company or if you are visiting.

Foreigners in the ancient town

Damien

VietNamNet Bridge – At 9am every morning, Damien rides through Hoi An town on his red motorbike with a wad of pamphlets. He calls on every hotel to deliver pamphlets to advertise for King Kong and Sleepy Gecko bars.

Though he has not worked for the two above bars for very long, Damien’s notebook is full of telephone numbers and addresses of hundreds of hotels and restaurants in Hoi An, which he visits every day to advertise these bars.

His day starts at 9am and ends at 11pm. From 9am to 5pm, Damien markets for Sleepy Gecko and from 7pm to 11pm, he is in charge of sound, light, and also a waiter and a cashier at the King Kong bar, owned by an Indian man.

Damien, 26, was born and grew up in Queensland state, Australia. He is an automobile engineer. “I worked for four years with broken-down engines. Sometimes I wondered why I had to spend my life with these failed machines?” he said. Damien quit his job and came to Vietnam as a backpacker.

“I planned to visit Vietnam for around one month. But when I came to Hoi An, I wanted to stay here immediately. I feel my life here is more meaningful,” he said. The current jobs don’t bring about high income for Damien but he loves them.

Hoi An enchants Damien because of the good, cheap food, fresh air, and friendly people. In his free time, Damien rides on his motorbike to restaurants along the Hoai River to taste local cuisines like hen xao, banh trang and che bap.

Damien is now an “expert” of Hoi An. He knows this ancient town better than some locals. “The first day in Hoi An, I dropped in at a common restaurant near Hoi An market to buy a plate of rice. The saleswoman charged me double. I quietly paid for the meal and left. The next day I returned to that restaurant, the saleswoman charged me half of the previous day. I was very surprised. She looked at me, smiled in a friendly way and told her nephew to translate to me: you are an acquaintance! That’s it! I become her acquaintance. That’s why I chose Hoi An to live and work.”

Nearly 200 foreigners are working and living in this small town. They do all kinds of jobs to earn their livings, from chef assistant to waiter, etc. It is not strange for Hoi An people to see foreigners work for Vietnamese employers. Recruitment ads in English can be seen at the door of many restaurants and hotels in Hoi An. Hoi An residents treat immigrants equally, though they have different skin colours and speak foreign languages.

For a Dutch couple, Marc, 36 and Fem, 27, Hoi An is the starting place for their family life. They met each other when they travelled Vietnam in late 2003 and the peaceful life in Hoi An brought them together.

Marc works as a tour guide for a local tourism company, Son My Son Co, Ltd., which organises tours to the My Son relics. Loving the quiet and peaceful atmosphere in the ancient town, Fem doesn’t want to return to Holland, but stay in Hoi An with Marc to build their new life. Their wedding party was a simple meal in a small house on Nhi Trung street.

Marc and Fem have decorated their small house like a tour operating office, with a Hoi An map marked with restaurants, shops and their products, prices, information that the couple spent several months collecting. The salary of Marc and Fem is sufficient to pay for their house and their daily living.

“It is very easy to live in Hoi An. The locals are lovely. We always feel comfortable loitering on the way and at cafes with local young people,” Marc said.

Their eldest son has a Vietnamese name, Son. “We named him Son to remember My Son,” Marc said.

This small family is waiting for a new member. “If my child is a girl, we will name her Hoi An, perhaps Nguyen Thi Hoi An,” Fem said.

For Scott McMillan, 30, from Britain, Hoi An is a favourable environment for his work. As a veterinary doctor, Scott came to Vietnam as a tourist. While staying in Hoi An for one week, Scott fell in love with this ancient town and sought to stay in Hoi An.

Hiring a small house in the town’s suburbs, Scott knocked on the door of many hotels and restaurants to seek a job. During the day he taught English at a foreign language centre in Da Nang city, 30km from Hoi An, and at night, he worked for a hotel in Hoi An.

After nearly four months working in that way, Scott became the manager of Pho Hoi 2 Hotel. At night, he teaches English to the hotel’s staffs and they teach him Vietnamese. Scott said he loves his current life very much.

“I cannot tell you my plan but in the very near future, I will do something for Hoi An, certainly for tourism. My parents greatly support me.”

Scott revealed that he is in love with a Hoi An girl. “We will get married and live here. I chose Hoi An as my home and my children may live here as well.”

Scott is trying to “speak Vietnamese well and further fit in the local community. I don’t want to be called ong Tay (foreigner). Why don’t they call me ong ta (Vietnamese)?” he said and smiled.

The mandatory qualifications/experiences required for this role are:

Vietnam warns of skilled labor shortage

Deputy PMs warn about shortage of skilled workers, inflation


Deputy Prime Minister cum Minister of Edutcation and Training Nguyen Thien Nhan

Deputy Prime Minister Nguyen Thien Nhan told a house session Tuesday that having a skilled labor pool would play a major role in wooing foreign investors, admitting, however, it was becoming a problem.

The fact that many foreign firms had thronged Vietnam to sound out business opportunities since 2006 meant there was an urgent need for ensuring the availability of human resources, he told the National Assembly.

Several major international groups like the US' Intel, Japan's Grenada, and Taiwan's Hon Hai were struggling to find personnel in Vietnam, he said, warning this could scare away foreign firms if not addressed.

He suggested several solutions.

Firstly, he called for an across-the-board program to enhance the training quality at universities and colleges.

Secondly, he told agencies concerned to study the training curriculums at foreign schools to adopt them in Vietnam.

Thirdly, he called for providing easy student loans for the poor and training programs tailored to meet the demands of the workplace.

Another deputy PM, Nguyen Sinh Hung, also spoke at the session, warning about the rising inflation that had become a source of concern for economic growth.

He also assured lawmakers that the government would do its best to curb the trade deficit by expediting the progress of major projects like the Dung Quat oil refinery in Quang Ngai Province, Thach Khe steel complex in Ha Tinh Province, and some fertilizer projects.

Nguyen Duc Kien, deputy chairman of the NA, confessed that inflation for the year would be around 9 percent, meaning the target of keeping it below the economic growth rate would not be achieved.

The government would need to draw lessons about its role in managing the economy, he admitted further.

Collecting old money, stamps

For the past 30 years, at a corner on Hai Ba Trung road, district 1, HCM City there has been an old man whose hair has turned white sitting next to an old, small desk to collect old coins, banknotes and stamps.

This man is named An, an original Saigon man. “I buy old money and stamps and then sell them to others. Collecting old money and stamps is a habit but that habit needs money,” he said.

The old man showed off his ancient coins. “This coin was produced in 1,039, in the Dinh Tien Hoang dynasty,” he said, raising a Thai Binh Hung Bao coin dating back to 968-981.

How much for that coin? “Perhaps more than VND1 million,” he said.

“You have to study to play with old money. To buy ancient coins, you must know Chinese, understand history to define the value of them. If you collect Indochinese money, you must know French, English and the volume of Indochinese banknotes remaining in the market. This banknote is worth several million dong,” he said, pointing to a banknote made in 1899.

He has also collected a lot of old stamps from passers-by. In the past 30 years, he has bought hundreds of stamps, including very rare ones, priced at millions of dong.

“How much longer will I sit here to buy and sell old money and stamps?”

“How long in your opinion, when I’m over 70 already? I think just several years more, till the time I cannot stand sunlight and rain like the past 30 years!”

Visiting her shop on Nguyen Thi Minh Khai road, one may think that he is in a strange and wonderful world, like in the world of tales, where Cinderella suddenly becomes a princess by means of magic.

Dung’s masks, festival costumes are very colourful and strange. “I guess you wonder: how can I sell these things when Vietnam doesn’t have carnivals? But I can still sell them to students, young people, and office staffs, to use at picnics or parties.”

Besides mysterious masks, Dung designs paper costumes of the 12 animals symbolising the cycle of 12 years, Mickey Mouse, clowns, Santa Claus, flowers, etc.

“Anybody wants to become Zorro, come here and I will satisfy him!” she said.

Writing love letters for 17 years

In 17 years working as a letter writer in French and English, Mr Ngo has witnessed both the sadness and happiness of many clients and has brought many couples together.

The job of Mr Ngo is closely attached to the HCM City Post Office, an old building built in 1886 in the special Asian-European architectural style. Foreign visitors come to the post office not only to see one of the oldest and most beautiful post offices in Asia but also to witness the work of an old letter writer.

At around 8am on a hot day of 2007, Mr Ngo, a thin old man came on a bicycle. He put the bicycle under the shadow of the sung dau trees, said hello to postcard peddlers, and arranged his table to begin a working day.

The table of Mr Ngo is arranged under a portrait of President Ho Chi Minh. He pulled two Vietnamese-English and Vietnamese-French dictionaries and a postal code directory from a briefcase. He pinned a red ribbon on his left hand as a symbol for his customers. Next to the table is a plate: “Instruction and letter writing”.

The first customer of Mr Ngo was a man from a Mekong Delta province. This man had worked as a driver for a European businessman for more than one year. The businessman had returned to his country and the driver wanted to write a letter to his boss asking him to pay health insurance and $200.

Understanding the situation, the old letter writer began his job. The letter was quickly completed in English. Sometimes Mr Ngo opened his Vietnamese-English dictionary to find a word.

Mr Ngo is considered a world connector, the only professional letter writer still working. For every letter he always very carefully chooses his words and writing style. As a professional letter writer, he understands how important words are.

But Mr Ngo is not simply a letter writer; he is a bridge spanning the gap between humans and an advisor to his customers.

Mr Ngo became an employee of the Saigon Post Office at the age of 17. He is now 75. The letter writer said that he had never been absent from work, even during war time. He speaks English and French quite fluently because he studied French at schools and English from American soldiers.

The second customer of Mr Ngo that morning was a young woman. She took a cell phone from her bag and showed Mr Ngo a message in French. Mr Ngo immediately translated the message: “When I met you, you showed me how Vietnam and Vietnamese people are and taught me Vietnamese. I can’t wait any more”. The girl smiled shyly. She got acquainted with a French guy through the Internet. She said she would return the next day to ask Mr Ngo to write a letter for her.

Female customers often call Mr Ngo a love letter writer, a poet and a matchmaker. Mr Ngo said he had been a matchmaker for several couples. “Their love is hindered by distance, language and culture and it is difficult to overcome these obstacles,” he said.

In 15 years working as a letter writer, Mr Ngo has witnessed the pain of many customers, about whom he has pledged to not release personal information. In turn, customers highly praise Mr Ngo for that virtue.

Mr Ngo has received thank-you letters from all over the world. These letters are sent to the “letter writer at the Saigon Post Office”. He has never received electronic letters. He doesn’t like computers and mobile phones. “Words from machines have no soul,” he said.

That morning, many Japanese visitors came to the HCM City Post Office to see the unique architecture and take pictures of Mr Ngo.

Mr Ngo is now the only letter writer in HCM City, and perhaps in Vietnam. His colleague – Huynh Lieng – passed away ten months ago. Mr Ngo has only one wish: that the world will have many more letter writers like him and his friend, Huynh Lieng.

(SGT-VUNG TAU) The Hong Lam Vocational College, a private international-institution, started the first academic school year 2007-08 yesterday in Vung Tau with 300 students, with the main aim to supply skilled technicians to industrial parks in Baria-Vung Tau Province.

The college will in the first academic year provide training in technical areas to meet labor demands of industrial tenants in the province.

Nguyen Xuan Thu, principal of the college, said that in its first stage, the college offers programs in electrical technology, refrigeration and air conditioning, welding, and automotive repair.

The school is owned by Nguyen Ngoc My, a Vietnamese Australian entrepreneur, with total invested capital of US$7 million. My said: “Our aim is to contribute to training skilled workers for the country by adopting international approaches to learning and teaching, quality assurance, and competency assessment.”

Hong Lam Vocational College offers two types of programs: two year curricula and one year curricula for advanced level trade diploma, and entry level trade certificate under Vietnamese regulations on vocational education training.

The college also provides various short courses and customized training programs for industries. The college is expected to train 1,000 graduates each year, of which 80% will work in industrial zones in Vietnam and others participating in export labor programs in English speaking countries.

In addition, short courses are offered for individuals and organizations to provide specific skills such as advanced welding, project management, financial management, information technology, accounting, and marketing.

The college was constructed from March last year, covering about 4,000 square meters and located in Phu My Town in Tan Thanh District, Ba Ria- Vung Tau Province.

Vietnam desperately needs trained Seamen

HCM CITY — As the country’s export numbers climb, its ships are bulging with products to send abroad. The problem is that while the domestic ocean vessel fleet has been developing rapidly, there are not enough seamen to man the ships.

"By August 31, the country had about 1,194 ocean vessels with total tonnage estimated at more than 4 million tonnes," said Nguyen Vu Hai, head of the Viet Nam Registration Department’s Ocean Shipping Division. "This has resulted in a serious shortage of mariners for ocean ships, particularly those running international routes."

With the exception of major companies such as Viet Nam Ocean Shipping Company (VOSCO), Viet Nam National Shipping Lines (Vinalines) and Viet Nam Shipping Company (Vinaship), marine transport companies have had to go to great lengths to ensure a sufficient supply of seamen for their fleets, he said.

The maritime industry finds it especially difficult to recruit workers because sailors have to have specific qualifications, Hai said.

They must have very good health, high discipline and the ability to endure hard living conditions. They are required to have professional skills and good proficiency in foreign languages.

They also have to be familiar with various legal systems, domestic and foreign.

To ensure such qualifications, the training period for a mariner is long: three years to become a skilled sailor, seven years an executive officer, 10 years a managing officer and between 12 and 14 years for a captain, he said.

A CEO of a marine transport company relates the difficulty of putting together a crew. "We had seven vessels, and were hard pressed to recruit men," he said. "In the end, we could find only five captains, three boatswains and three engine room heads."

"Hiring sailors is a hard job because most job centres that lease seamen prefer to work with foreign companies to make bigger profits," said Do Khac That, director of the Seamen Labour Export Company.

"Recruiting mariners with enough qualifications is difficult, but keeping them for a long time is much more difficult," That said."Most skilled sailors want to work for companies that can offer them good working conditions and high salaries. Some mariners give up their jobs when they find another one that is safer and pays more."

Hai admitted that the average Vietnamese mariner’s income is equivalent to only one-sixth of that of an average Japanese sailor’s, or three-fifth of one from the Philippines.

The shortfall in new mariners to meet demand by domestic maritime transport companies has put a huge dent in the business of domestic seamen labour export as well.

Vinalines reported that its labour export business has not seen smooth sailing in recent years.

In 2004, the corporation sent 1,089 seamen to work abroad, earning nearly US$8.13 million. But the number of mariners to be sent this year is estimated to be only 60 per cent of that figure.

Corporation officials attributed the decrease to an insufficient supply of qualified mariners for the export market.

Viet Nam only has two establishments involved in training university-level mariners, the Viet Nam Maritime University and the Southern Transport and Communications University, in addition to some colleges and vocational training schools.

These schools train 1,500 seamen each year. That is not enough to meet the domestic market’s demand.

Le Ngoc Trinh, director of the Maritime College No.1, said most mariner training facilities are in poor conditions and have outdated teaching aids. That means students cannot acquire the necessary skills training.

The maritime industry does not have uniform training standards, so each establishment has its own standards, said Duong Dinh Huynh, head of the Viet Nam Maritime Administration’s Personnel Office. The result is that mariners come with different skill levels.

The Ministry of Transport plans to issue common criteria, requiring all domestic seamen training establishments to adhere to them to ensure standard training quality, according to Deputy Minister Tran Doan Tho. — VNS

Michelle�s journey took her to the heart of Vietnam

LAST month, Dungarvan native, Michelle Power, packed her bags and traded the unpredictable West Waterford weather for the sweltering humidity of Vietnam�s bustling cities.

Michelle, a Work and Travel Advisor at the Dungarvanbased travel organisation, ito-i, was journeying on behalf of her company to assess the various locally run projects in Vietnam, where i-to-i sends approximately 100 volunteers every year.

As part of its general business practice, the company, which works with more than 500 locally run projects across the globe, regularly sends staff abroad to assess the safety, viability and level of need of its volunteer projects.

While in Vietnam, Michelle visited 10 such projects, including eight projects in Hanoi and two in Ho Chi Minh City. When asked about the most memorable of these, Michelle commented that she was most affected by the community development projects in Hanoi and the charity cooking house project in Ho Chi Minh City. �Our community development projects in Hanoi are very well run. They were also very rewarding, as here you�re helping special needs children, and the kids are unbelievable...so happy and so appreciative of everything you do for them.�

As for the charity cooking house in Ho Chi Minh City, which prepares approximately 2,000 meals per day and delivers them by hand to hospital patients and under-privileged people in the area, Michelle was quick to relay the project�s importance: �The most compelling project I visited was the cooking house, as you can really see the immediate results of the work that you�re doing. In the morning, you are literally filling bags of rice and then distributing them to hospital patients and other deserving people. Being involved in the distribution of rice to people in the city who are living in poverty was great, because you actually got to see the appreciation on people�s faces when you arrived.�

When asked if she would return to Vietnam again, Michelle replied, �In a heartbeat. Vietnam is an amazing country with a lot to offer and an amazing history to explore. There is so much culture and fascinating things to see and do. In close collaboration with the ADB and MONRE, WWF Greater Mekong is running a 5-year project, the Central Truong Son Biodiversity Conservation Corridor which aims to maintain the ecological integrity of the Central Truong Son landscape through improved management of core areas for biodiversity conservation and the sustainable development of the landscape through the creation of community co-management
mechanisms. In Vietnam, the project covers the provinces of Quang Nam, Quang Tri and Thua Thien Hue provinces. In Quang Tri, the CTS Conservation Programme is also supported through a grant from DANIDA.

WWF Vietnam Country Programme is seeking an experienced and qualified national candidate to fill the position of COMMUNITY DEVELOPMENT OFFICER working full-time for a WWF project in Quang Tri Province, Vietnam.

Major duties and responsible:

The Community Development Officer is a full-time position to the project. The position will be contracted by WWF to facilitate participatory and consultative processes in community land use planning, community co-management agreement, which stakeholders develop, agree and adopt participatory management plans within a natural resource management mosaic under this project.

The position will assist the Quang Tri provincial authorities to develop and implement community based forest management in Dakrong and Huong Hoa communes, and assist in the implementation of both DANIDA and BCI project activities as agreed with provincial partners, and under direction from the Quang Tri Technical Advisor.

The main qualifications required:

A higher degree in a related field (forestry, sociology, resource management)
At least five years of professional experience in a relevant field
Experience working for or with ODA projects and/or a relevant government agency
Familiarity with community conservation concepts, including community forestry and co-management

VietNamNet Bridge - As many as 62,760 Vietnamese workers have been sent to work abroad under time-limit contracts since the beginning of the year, meeting 78.5 percent of the annual plan, the Overseas Labour Management Department reported.

The department, under the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs, said Malaysia is Vietnam’s biggest labour import market, which currently has 21,313 guest-workers, followed by Taiwan (16,554), the Republic of Korea (8,536), Qatar (4,350), Japan (3,047), Macau (1,631) and other countries (7,032 in total).

The RoK is a promising labour market for Vietnamese workers due to its relatively high salary, ranging between US$800 and US$1,000. However, the number of jobs is limited.

An official from the department said Vietnam is one of 15 labour markets which receive high appreciation from RoK employers. Vietnamese labourers are skilful and there rarely break labour contracts. As Vietnam is engaged in the Employment Permit System (EPS) programme under the memorandum of understanding signed with the RoK, it has the highest number of workers in the RoK as compared with other countries.

At the moment, the centre for overseas labour, under the Ministry of Labour, Invalids and Social Affairs is the only centre authorised to recruit workers for the RoK.

63 pct of Vietnamese university graduates fail to find jobs

Up to 63 percent of university and college graduates in Vietnam are unable to find jobs, local newspaper Labor on Wednesday quoted statistics from the country's Ministry of Education and Training as reporting.

One of main reason for the situation is inappropriate training programs with few textbooks at many universities, the newspaper said.

In the 2006-2007 academic year, 161,411 students graduated from universities nationwide.

Vietnam currently has 1,540,201 university and college students, or 181 students per 10,000 residents. The number of universities and colleges in Vietnam will double the current figure to reach 600 by 2020, the paper said.

If you recently finished school or quit your job, you might have considered living abroad. Are you full of comprehension, but ready to take on the challenge of starting a life in a new exotic setting? There are as many reasons for taking the plunge as there are people who do indeed work overseas. But where to start? Right here with an LAG article.

2005-2007 Hanoi, Vietnam - Welcome to part 1 of a practical guide series on life as a foreigner. I'll be writing about places I've actually lived and summing up the best, worst, and misunderstood about each place.

Northern Vietnam, and Hanoi in particular, often goes overlooked by those world travelers looking to finance the next step of their adventure. In Asia, most people think first about working in Thailand, Japan, Korea, or Taiwan. But Hanoi holds some real possibilities for work and adventure. Let's skip the pitch and assume you want useful information about what it takes to make it in the Red River Delta.

Section 1. Finding work

No matter how cheap the cost of living is, you'll need money to finance your adventure. Luckily for native English speakers, there is a growing demand for English teachers and not much concern over credentials and training. There are other opportunities available, but for those of you at the beginning of your career, none pay as well as teaching English. If you want to get involved in other fields, you should consider the chances for advancement and the value of experience before the take-home pay.

1.A Teaching English

As of 2007, private English teachers could make $15-20 per hour at any number of places. Factor in more if you look stereotypically Western (blond hair, blue eyes), less if you look decidedly Asian. Most schools look for those with a clean, friendly appearance and a four-year degree. Cleverlearn has a relatively new language center in town, and is a popular place to teach, given the free use of their media room and fitness gym. Apollo is another large private school. The city is exploding with private language institutes, and you really can find opportunities within a week if you just show up and start asking around. There are also some positions that are only available to those with teaching experience or credentials, but it is unclear whether employers are really being discerning. Universities are among this questionable group, since they often demand experienced teachers but don't pay a higher wage or bother to check resumes.

The beauty of teaching English in Hanoi is that you are free to profit fully from networking and taking on new jobs. The work pays by the hour and I know one person who was able to maintain a luxurious lifestyle and save money for the future on only nine hours of teaching each week. It's often small corporate lessons and at-home tutoring that pay very well but don't offer many hours. You can't get these jobs right away, so don't be so quick to completely fill up your schedule with jobs that pay just the average. Above all else, teaching English is a great starting point - giving you the security and flexibility to look for that perfect job.

1.B Teaching other stuff
Experienced or certified teachers can look for work at Hanoi's two international schools, the United Nations International School (UNIS) and the Hanoi International School (HIS). They do most of their hiring at international job fairs, but they do seek local hires from time to time. You can also call and put your name on the substitute teachers' list.

Don't be afraid to teach what you know. Many have successfully taught yoga and other trendy classes to the executive expat crowd. Just don't expect to get rich teaching ordinary Vietnamese. English lessons are seen as a valuable investment that will pay off professionally, unlike Pilates.

1.C International intrigue
You won't find an entry-level or mid-level job at many foreign companies in Hanoi, but you might have more luck with international charities and development organizations. Don't expect to make much money at first (or ever) but it is a good chance to get your hands dirty. Talk to the people at the NGO Resource Center to find out where the action is.

1.D Journalism
Hanoi, like anywhere else, holds possibilities for the aspiring journalist or photojournalist. Be aware though that calling yourself either of these things without the proper government approval is a recipe for disaster. Writing any news content carries a risk.

That said, many freelance journalists operate successfully from Hanoi with proper press ID. And the country's English-language daily, the ever popular Vietnam News, often hires young foreigners to help edit and rewrite their content. The capital's media has been growing at a furious pace recently, and there are even opportunities in television and radio.

Section 2. Living

Everyone has their own needs, but it's a safe bet that you'll want food, shelter, and some protection against sudden death. Read on...

2.A Housing

To avoid costly mistakes, arrange housing before you get to Hanoi. While housing is affordable, the city's hotels are not. Check out classified sites like The New Hanoian or Expat Vietnam. Having roommates is ideal because of the way most houses are built. Tall and narrow, it's easy for everyone to have their own bedroom. Decent apartments are becoming more common, though you pay a large premium over sharing a house. Here is some housing market data to think about:
-a typical furnished five story house cost me $450/month
-the same house was leased for $600 after I left; the difference? I had a Vietnamese blood relative negotiating for me.
Most houses rented to young foreigners will go for between $600 and $900, split between three or four people. Even without expert negotiators, that's much cheaper than apartments which are in such high demand that they start around $400 and are much harder to bargain down.

2.B Eating

Here's where you can make the case that Hanoi is a horrible place to live. The food tastes great, but it has a price. If you are pulling down over $2000/month, you can pay that price in cash by going to upscale restaurants and ordering delivered food from trusty restaurants. However, most will want to be extremely careful about what they put in their mouths.
Rule 1: Assume you will get parasitic worms. Buy and take worm pills every six months.
Rule 2: Ask for no MSG. Khong mi chinh! (pronounced hchkhchhckhck-hoe-ng mee ching) Any Vietnamese person who was allergic or sensitive to MSG died long ago, so none of the survivors think twice about adding two tablespoons of MSG to every dish.
Rule 3: Say no to extras. Oh, how nice! They gave you a moist towelette. Don't worry, as it WILL show up on your bill. If you aren't going to use the towelette or eat the peanuts be sure to send them back immediately.
Rule 4: Don't rely on subtlety. If you need a waiter scream, "Em oi!" (pronounced M-uhhh-ee!) This is the equivalent of screaming, "yo bee-atch," and it's the only way to get attention and respect in a local eatery.
Rule 5: Don't eat ice, raw vegetables or cut fruit. That's where the serious parasites live and you should eat this things only once you have built a resistance to local microbes AND found people you trust to run a sanitary kitchen.

There is a whole other set of rules for buying and cooking your own food, but I will give you the condensed version: HIRE SOMEONE TO DO YOUR SHOPPING.

2.C Safety

While not strictly required, I couldn't send you off to Hanoi without a brief primer on personal safety. Hanoi is a boiling kettle of death, and it's only by luck that one is able to survive. Again, we have some simple rules.

Rule 1: Always be safe on the road.
-Funny, right? goes without saying? You'd think so, but foreigners in Hanoi are a boastful bunch, and often fueled by alcohol. Don't get on a bike without a helmet (get one that fits well and protects your jaw and face). You probably shouldn't even cross the road without one. Also, don't drive beyond your abilities. Most young foreigners are riding motorcycles for the first time in their lives, and you should NOT fold under the pressure to be as nonchalant as they are. Ride as a passenger everyday for at least a week to learn the real rules of the road. In two years, I never drove myself, relying on motorcycle taxis instead. They are affordable and you can pick experienced drivers. Try calling Cokbi (tel:04 262 6364), and remember to brind a helmet with you.

Rule 2: Master your fears, cross the road
-There is a true art to crossing the road in Hanoi. Continuously look both ways, no matter how impossible it is at the moment to imagine someone driving the wrong direction. Move smoothly - no sudden stops or starts. NEVER step backwards. Waggle your hand in front of you to signal that you are moving forward.

Rule 3: Be aware of trends in crime
-Violent crime is low in Hanoi, but rising. Keep your bling hidden and keep yourself visible. Motorbike theft and home burglary are very common, so don't leave your bike on the street at night and keep a safe at home for cash and valuables (the heavier, the better).

Rule 4: Don't give up your passport
-You are nothing without a foreign passport. Authority figures may try to lay their hands on it, either because they want to put you in a helpless situation or because they don't know better. By law, foreigners are required to carry their passports at all times, but you can get away with a photocopy. Always give the photocopy, and leave the real thing in a safe.

and we also have one suggestion - not a safety issue, unless you consider sounding stupid a risk to your ego:
Remember, they call it the American war.
-The Vietnamese had plenty of wars before ours, and plenty of independence wars. The one with marines, napalm, the Ho Chi Minh trail, and all that good studd is called the American war in Hanoi.

Section 3. Having fun
Why else would you be going to Hanoi? Here's the top ten:

10. Bobby Chin's
This upscale dining establishment sets the standard in town. Western prices for western fusion -a nice treat for special occasions.

9. Truc Bac lake
This underrated lake is only one of many in Hanoi, but it's well worth the visit. It's where John McCain parachuted during the war. You can easily walk around the lake, but like all walking tours, it's best to get it done early. By 6am the street traffic will give all but the most hardy foot jockeys a hard time.

8. Books and DVDs
"Copyright?!! We don't need no stinking copyright!" Pirated foreign language books and DVDs still flood the market in Hanoi, and who could blame the sellers? There is not enough demand and no legitimate market for these products here.

7. Dragonfly
This bar has become somewhat of an institution. A bit of a sweaty meat market, but let's be honest, that's why you like it. (15 Hang Buom, dragonfly_bar@yahoo.com)

6. RnR Tavern
Day or night, the tavern is the best place in town for affordable tacos and burritos. At night, the mood turns decidedly psychedelic and the all-Vietnamese Grateful Dead cover band plays weekly. 5. Hang Trong street
Don't know what to do with your weekend? Go to Hang Trong. Popular rooftop cafe, PUKU, is here to help nurse your hangover. When you're done, window shop the art shops and haggle yourself a famous oil painting.

4. Cinematheque
This 'club' is the best place for theater-style movies. There's excellent food, wine and coffee that you can take into the movies. They often have special theme weeks with a truly international film selection and lots of highly rated documentaries. Best of all, they run on donations and concessions only. (22A Hai Ba Trung)

3. Titanic (aka the Ship of Fools)
This bar on a boat is on the 'bad' side of town (i.e. the side not protected from flash floods), but that's only part of the reason why it's known by some as the Ship of Fools. Titanic is usually open after most other bars have been shut by the police. Definitely THE place to lose some inhibitions and be silly. That all stops the moment it's time to go home, since you'll have deal with walking across the narrow gang plank and, of course, the 'bad' side of town.

2. Master Quang
Master Pham Vu Quang teaches Shao Lin kung fu, as well as Tai Chi. I recommend the kung fu, at least twice a week if you are physically able. You can arrange very affordable one-on-one lessons at his personal studio overlooking Hai Ba Trung street.

1. Quan An Ngon
Literally, 'Delicious Restaurant', Quan An Ngon is one of the best places in town, and surprisingly it's also one of the cheapest (not to mention safe). Generally, the more dishes offered in a Vietnamese restaurant, the worse and more expensive the food is. If a place offers only one dish, it's sure to taste great and be cheap. Here, dozens of food stalls operate within one courtyard, each serving only one dish at rock-bottom prices (with a modest mark-up for wait staff and rents). Perhaps the best reason to eat here is that none of it is local food. Food at the 'Delicious Restaurant' is all southern style, replacing the fat, grisle, and MSG of the north with fresh herbs and spices of the south. (18 Phan Boi Chau street)

There is one more reason to live and work in Hanoi and that reason is Air Asia. Now that this low cost airline has opened flights between Hanoi, Bangkok, and KL, there is nothing to keep you from exploring Southeast Asia's treasures. Factoring in the relative ease of saving money in Hanoi (versus Bangkok or Tokyo) and you've got to agree, nothing beats it as a home base for your adventures.

Training in agricultural techniques in Vietnam

I'm looking for practitioners/consultants with experience of permaculture in Vietnam - preferably Vietnamese.

A new program is starting on upland livelihoods in Vietnam. This will include training in agricultural techniques, capacity building of local service providers and village development planning. Permaculture is an alternative to common agricultural practises and I would like to include this as an option in the program.
